— Why Nepal?

1. Location: 10/40 windows - The "10/40 Window" is a special view of our world. It stretches from 10 degrees north to 40 degrees north of the equator, and travels from North Africa to East Asia. This special view is important to Christians because of what we see through this window.

"The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field (Matthew 9:37-9:38)”

2. Nepal has 3% of Christianity from the population of about 29 million people.

3. This nation is dominated by different sects of Hinduism and Buddhism.

4. There is political unrest which the people could not find peace through the government.

5. Churches are still young and need assistance for training and equipping.

“To disciple energetic and spiritual leaders in the area of Christian Education and Church Planting in remote places of Nepal”

— OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the 5-year term, the expectations are the following:

1. To produce Young Christian Educators and Preachers who are called by God to preach and to teach the Gospel

2. To plant churches through these young preachers and teachers

3. To help Bible schools by doing volunteer teaching on the field of Christian Education

· STRATEGIES

1. Teach Christian Education at Bible schools

2. Select interested students to be mobile teachers and preachers

3. Coordinate with the existing churches for teaching schedules

4. Strengthen the Young Mobile Teachers through prayers

5. Encourage YMT (Young Mobile Teachers) to share the burdens to other youth to be trained as teachers

6. Involve these young teachers in actual church planting through children and youth teaching and evangelism

Introduction:

Divine Exchange can be summed up in two sentences:

1. God took all the bad that was due to us because of our sin and laid it on Jesus.

2. God took all the good that was due to the sinless obedience of Jesus and offers it to us, free of charge, when we put our faith in Christ.

I. Jesus took our punishment and offers us remission of our sins. - 2 Cor. 5:21

II. Jesus took our sickness and pain and offers us healing and health. - 1 Pet. 2:24

III. Jesus took our death and offers us life. - Rom. 6:23

IV. Jesus took our poverty and offers us abundance. - 1 Cor. 8:9

V. Jesus took our shame and offers us a share of His glory. - Heb. 12:2

VI. Jesus took our rejection and offers us acceptance in God's family. - Matt. 27:46

VII. Jesus took our curse and offers us His blessings. - Gal. 3:13-14

The Divine Exchange is our inheritance but many of us are not walking in it.

Dear Christian Brethren,

Jaimashi! (may the victory of the Messiah be with you all).

I am Bro. Norberto De Castro, a member of Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches particularly of San Pascual Baptist Church in San Pascual, Batangas. Our sending church is the Estancia Baptist Church of Estancia, Iloilo. I had been a pastor-church planter for about 18 years in the Philippines. But God called our family as missionaries here in Nepal under The Paul Mission.

The Paul Mission (TPM) is a training institution for short-term missionaries including Filipinos. It is a Korean-based mission agency. They gave the opportunities of 3 years exposure and experience for the short-termers like us.

We have been here in Nepal for two years. We are now entering in our 3^rd year of missionary exposure. After the 3-year short term in Nepal, we have to go back to Philippines for prayer and assessment of our mission agency and to raise Missionary funds and to find supporters for our ministerial finances in the future.

The TPM which is supported by Korean churches and individuals is like a big sister helping the Filipino churches to be independent for overseas mission works. The TPM ministry is to give assistance to Filipino Missionaries for a period of 3 years only. After the three-year term and assessment, TPM will no longer provide funds so that Filipino workers must be supported by Filipino churches and brethren.

Because of these, we as missionaries here in Nepal ask for prayers of your churches and fellowship. We do believe that in your heart is the command of our Lord Jesus Christ to “go and make disciples of all nations”. I and my family are willing to step by faith and to continue the work here in Nepal.

Here are our prayer concerns:

1. That God may open the hearts of all the Filipino churches, fellowshipping groups and individuals to participate actively in overseas missions.

2. That God will provide our family the wisdom and the skills how to assist effectively the Nepali pastors and future leaders.

3. That God may pour out His Spirit for the redemption of the Nepalese from the bondage of sin and curses.

May the unfailing love of the Lord be in your heart always.

As Christian volunteers here in Nepal, we continually assist these four Nepali boys for their educational needs. And that is through the help also of some friends who are willing to extend their arms to them.

Mishael’s father died when he was 3 years old. Because of that his mother decided to take him to a hostel. He is now 9 years old and he is in Class 2.

Hananiah’s father died when he was 5 five years old. He is now living in a church hostel and studying in Class 2.

Daniel also was promoted from Class 3 to Class 5. He is also an orphan from the village. Until now, he cannot able to remember even the face of his parents. He is now living in a church hostel.

Azariah is an orphan boy from the remote village here in Nepal. Last school year he was in Class 3 but because of his capacity to be promoted he is now at Class 5. He is 10 years old.
Daniel also was promoted from Class 3 to Class 5. He is also an orphan from the village. Until now, he cannot able to remember even the face of his parents. He is now living in a church hostel.

Nepalese food is very healthy. For people travelling to Nepal on vacation, back-packing or trekking it is good to know what food is eaten in Nepal in order to prepare for the trip.
Nepalese food is heavily influenced by Indian and Tibetan cuisine and consequently you should come across a wide variety of food during your stay. International foods from across the globe are particularly represented in restaurants in Kathmandu.

Although traditional Nepalese food is often described as ‘bland’, Nepalese cuisine is certainly healthy and extremely nourishing.

The most popular Nepalese food includes a dish called ‘dhal bhat tarkari’. Dhal bhat tarkari consists of rice (bhat), curried vegetables (tarkari) and a type of lentil soup know as dhal. Bhat is certainly a staple Nepalese food. However in areas where rice is scare (primarily in poor and high-altitude areas) the staple food is usually dhiro, a thick mush which is produced from corn or millet.

1. Church Ministry

We have been helping three church planting; the New Heaven Church in Sitapaila, Kathmandu; the Holy Life Church in Chitwan ( five hours away from Kathmandu); and Nala Church ( three hours away from Kathmandu).

2. Educational Ministry

P. Bert has been teaching English Grammar and Conversation at Gloria School for a year. It is a school mostly for poor children comes from the remote villages. Commonly they are they are fatherless and orphans. English Learning with Gospel integration through stories and tricks is presented.

Sis. Zen is teaching English Christian Songs during devotional time. During special occasion she is also teaching Interpretative Worship Dance and Modern Christian Dance.

3. Social Work/Children’s Home Ministry

We are assisting our senior worker for taking care and for providing basic needs for the four Nepali boys: two are in Class 1 and the other two are in Class 3

4. Scholarship/sponsorship Ministry

By giving sponsorship for tuition fee and food for two students of Nepal Baptist Bible College. Mostly these students were forsaken by their families for being Christians. They need help and love coming from brethren.

5. Bible College Teaching

P. Bert will teach at Nepal Baptist Bible College this coming July. This college is sponsored by 110 independent Baptist Churches. It has also the Pastor and Leadership Training for the leaders of the church who do not have time for formal Bible College training because of ministerial works in their respective places.

LITERACY PROJECT PROPOSALS

I. PURPOSE

The literacy project firmly desires to accomplish the following purposes:

1. To teach the people ( youth and adults) how to read and write in Nepali and in English languages
2. To encourage Christian believers to create impact on the community through language teaching
3. To demonstrate our concern by helping poor people to communicate both in speaking and in writing
4. To fulfill the command of God to love our neighbors particularly the poor.

II. PERSONNEL

God works with man every time he carries out his divine plan. The stated purposes above will be accomplished by the following personnel:

1. Literacy Trainer
2. Volunteer Workers
3. Financial Supporters
4. Community Leaders
5. Church-Community Coordinators

III. PROGRAM

The accomplishment of the literacy project is achieved through the following programs:

1. Prayer and Preparation
2. Volunteer Teachers Training and Selection
2.1 – Coordination with church leaders for referral
2.2 – Prayer before selection
2.3 – Sharing of vision
2.4 – 18-hour Training Requirement
3. Coordination with Community and Church Leaders
4. Visitation (Make friends with the target people living in nearby villages.)
5. Duplication ( To transfer to others the literacy teaching techniques through seminar)
6. Gathering (Congregate the target people with their leaders for orientation)
7. Setting The Schedule for the Target Place
8. Looking for Other Felt-Needs.
9. Gospel Presentation (Gradually share the gospel to them through our lesson and kindness.)
10. Follow-Up (Contact church leaders for follow-up.)
11. Special Gathering (Make a special gathering or programs for literacy students.)

IV. MATERIALS

Literacy course materials are to be provided for effective training. The materials needed are:

1. Lesson and materials for Teachers training

V. BUDGET & FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Budget and financial assistance are indispensable to any project such as literacy program. The listed basic expenses are to be met promptly and the sources of funds are to be inspired by earnest prayer and fruitful partnership.

Selection of teachers for training is crucial factor to the success of the program. It must be done following the requirements set forth below.

1. He must be a born again believer.
2. He must have the assurance of salvation.
3. He must be a faithful member of the local church.
4. He must have God’s calling as teacher.
5. He must have love and concern for his countrymen for doing voluntary work on literacy.
6. He must have the heart of Jesus of loving for the poor.
7. He must be faithful, available and teachable.

VII. ESTIMATED EXPENSES

The estimated expenses give the project director and the coordinators the ability to figure out the financial amount involved for easy contribution, collection, consumption, and submission.

• Misconceptions about Leadership

Everyone knows what leadership is and understands it.

Leadership is the same as management.

• Leadership vs. Management

Management is about coping with complexity. Leadership is about coping with change.
Management develops the capacity to achieve its plan by organizing and staffing. Leadership aligns people.
Management ensures plan accomplishment by controlling and problem solving. Leadership achieves a vision by motivating and inspiring.

• So, what is a leader?

A leader is one who can motivate people to a common vision of the future in such a manner that they want to work together to make the vision a reality.

• What are the characteristics of a leader?

He is a risk taker.
He takes control of his own destiny.
He is not afraid of failure.
He has a clear vision of the future. He knows where he wants to go.
He knows how to help others see the same thing that he does.
He is not satisfied with the situation as it is today.

• What are the characteristics of an effective leader?

He has a perspective that allows him to focus his ministry.
He maintains a learning posture throughout his life.
He has experienced renewal several times in his lifetime.
He has disciplined his own spiritual formation.
He possesses a network of key relationships.

Our Commitment to Being a Great Commission Local Church

There are two reasons why local churches need to be committed to the Great Commission.

First, it is Biblical.

1) The Great Commission was given to the whole church – not just to the twelve or to a select few.
Jesus clarified that the Great Commission was to be accomplished in several locations simultaneously.
(Acts 1:8)
If everyone is to participate in the Great Commission, it is the responsibility of the pastor to help his people find their place in fulfilling that responsibility.
2) We were designed to work together – not as individuals.
3) It is the model we have been given in the New Testament.
(Acts 13:1-4)

Second, it is practical.

1) Local churches throughout history have accepted their responsibility to fulfill the Great Commission. Therefore, it can be done!
2) The local church is God’s mobile unit for world evangelization.
It can go anywhere.
It can adapt to local circumstances and needs.
Biblical instructions for the organization of local churches are very simple
It is easily duplicated.
3) Essential training is available to missionary candidates only through the local church.

Therefore:

Let us resolve that our local churches will accept their responsibility to world evangelization and to the training and sending of missionary candidates to make disciples of all peoples.
OK! Right on! But how?

The Model

The model is found in the church at Syrian Antioch. What did this church do?

They prayed.
(Acts 1:4; 2:42; 4:31; Matthew 9:36-38; I Timothy 2:1-4)

They planned.

They commended and sent.

Working Together

I Kings 6:7

I.They had a big goal.

A.They were building the largest Temple ever built in Jerusalem.
B.We have a big goal. We are evangelizing the whole world.

II.God was in it.

A.Seen in the instructions given to Hiram.
I Kings 5: 3-5
B.God is in it for us too!
Seen in the giving of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20)
Seen in the promise given to the believers in Jerusalem (Acts 1:7-8)

III.They did quality work.

A.The facts:
These stones were the size of a medium sized room (4.5 meters cubed). See 7:10.
Perhaps there were 3000 of these blocks used in the construction of the Temple.
They were cut with hand tools (saws, chisels).
They were cut in such a way that they fit in place perfectly. Mortar was not needed to fill the spaces.
B.We need to do quality work.
We are building the kingdom of heaven.
The people we are working with are people for whom Christ died on the cross.
The work we are doing has eternal value and consequences.

IV.The work force consisted of people from several different cultures.

A.There were:
Tyrians
Gebalites
Jews

B.Our work force also consists of people from many different cultures.
There are:
Filipinos (of several different people groups)
Americans
Koreans
Chinese
Japanese
Canadians
Swedes
Germans
Etc.

V.There were no superstars.

A.Out of 3850 men working only Solomon and Adoniram are mentioned.
B.We ought not to be looking for the recognition of our fellow workers either.

Conclusion

If Solomon’s people could do it, we can do it! Let’s commit ourselves to working together to accomplish our goal of evangelizing the whole world.

ONE YEAR EXPERIENCES

May I share to you my experiences in the mission field for one year of been staying here in Nepal.

1. To get up as early as 4:30 a.m. to prepare food for our four Nepali boys that we are taking care of.

2. To be dragged inside the public bus without hearing any excuse or "I'm sorry" from the local offender.

3. To live together with other co-workers with my family just to tighten our budget for the next visa renewal.

4. To cut our food allowance for my tuition fee at the university to study the language and of course to get study visa which is the cheapest visa in this country.

5. To be embarrased by pronouncing the local dialects in different way, of course, with different connotation of meaning.

MISSION POSSIBLE.....

We have left Philippines with hope in our hearts to be instruments of hope and joy in the lives of the Nepali people. With our son Paul ( he was two years old that time ), we packed all things, "burned all the bridges" and accepted the challenge of being volunteer workers in the only one Hindu kingdom in the world ( during that time ). I had my mixed emotions. I was saddened that for almost twenty years of working in the Philippines as Bible teacher and pastor, I have to change the course of my life as a missionary. And I was happy to follow the will of God in my life.
